GANGOTRI GLACIER is the largest glacier in the Himalayan region, which is located in Uttarkashi district. The volume of this glacier is 27 cubic km. And its length and width are about 30 and 4 km. The Gangatri Glacier borders China and is the primary source of water for the Ganges and the Bhagirathi. Gangotri is the largest Himalayan glacier surrounded by the Meru, Shivling and Thale Sagar peaks. This glacier, at its lower level, is joined by a cirque called Chaukhamba Peak which flows northwest and finally converges into the shape of a cow's mouth. Hence, this place is called Gomukh, which means - the mouth of the cow. GANGOTRI GLACIER
Gangotri Glacier is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. This Glacier is one of the primary sources of River Ganga. The Glacier is 30 km long and around 4 km wide. Gangotri Glacier trek is located in Gangotri National Park. The permits are obtained before going to the trek. Permits are verified at the check post which is around 2 km from the Gangotri town. After obtaining permit to enter Gangotri National Park, one has to trek 19 km journey to reach Gangotri Glacier.
